Dr. Christine Kaseba-Sata, the First Lady of Zambia, was featured in the news media recently for operating on two cervical cancer patients at the Mkushi district hospital.
An OB/GYN, Kaseba received the GBCHealth Frontline Hero award for her fight against cervical and breast cancer and her leadership on women’s health issues at the GBCHealth Annual Conference in May 2013, where she participated in a session on family planning as a “Best Buy” for Global Health. She will be a featured speaker at GBCHealth’s regional conference in Johannesburg, South Africa on October 15-18, and GBCHealth is working with Kaseba on a cervical cancer campaign in Zambia.
To assist with the surgery, Mopani Copper Mines donated three surgical staff. Mopani is working with the Private Sector Constituency, which GBCHealth coordinates as Secretariat, to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), comprised of 15 southernmost countries in Africa. Discussions are underway on a regional cervical cancer initiative.
